University of York Library & Archives closure - 23 July

Following last year's successful Library & Archives Staff Training Day, we have scheduled a follow-up event on Friday 23 July, 2010. This will focus on the quality of our customer service, and given the current refurbishment and the feedback we are receiving from users on library services during this work, the need to have a meeting for all staff has been strongly reinforced.

We therefore intend to close the Library & Archives (JB Morrell, Raymond Burton and King's Manor Libraries and Borthwick Institute for Archives) on Friday 23 July for this purpose.

Please contact Stephen Town (jst504@york.ac.uk, x.3863) about any adverse effect on specific academic requirements this may cause, so that we can make arrangements to mitigate these.

The catalogue and electronic resources will remain available on 23 July; Key Texts and DVDs borrowed on 22 July will be due back on 24 July.

Brynmor Jones Library affected by maintenance work from Mon 5th July

Please note the following:

On Monday the 5th of July 2010 refurbishment and maintenance work will commence in two separate areas of the Brynmor Jones Library.

Second Floor
From Monday the 5th of July the 2nd Floor of the Brynmor Jones Library will be closed whilst work is undertaken to upgrade the lighting on this floor. Initial work will involve the removal of the existing ceiling and whilst this is underway there will be no access to any of the material on that floor. Once the work on the ceiling is complete staff within the Brynmor Jones Library will be operating a daily retrieval service for customers who require materials located on the second floor. Customers requiring materials retrieving from the 2nd floor can submit requests at the circulation desk or via an email to help@hull.ac.uk. [N.B we have been informed this should not affect the 2nd Floor East - only the Tower. CK]

Whilst we have been informed that the whole project should be completed by the 31st July 2010 the contractors are unable to predit with any certainty the length of time that the first stage, taking down the existing ceiling, will take. I would reiterate that during this first stafe materials and resources located on the 2nd floor WILL NOT be available.

Fourth Floor
From Mon the 5th of July work will also begin on replacing some damaged pipe-work on the west side of the 4th floor of the Brynmor Jones Library. Whilst this work is taking place the west side of the floor will be cordoned off and the sixth floor will be temporarily designated as the 'Silent Floor'. Books and other materials should still be accessible whilst the work is in progress but computers on the west side of the floor will be removed to protect them from damage. Again, the nature of the work being undertaken means that it is impossible to give a firm schedule for the completion of the work at this time although it is expected that this will take much less time than that being propese for the second floor.

I would like to apologise in advance for the disturbance and inconvenience that this essential refurbishment and maintenance work will cause those of our customers who may need access to the resources on these floors.

If you would like any more information on these material please contact Judy Wolff on Tel: 04182 46 5438 or by email: j.wolff@hull.ac.uk.
