New York Uni Library plans: your input wanted

As you may know the University of York Library is currently planning the re-development of the space in the Computer Science building when it becomes available in 2010/11 and the associated re-development and refurbishment of the JB Morrell Library. The Library is currently trying to get as much feedback, ideas and thoughts about how staff and students would like to use this space and what they feel is needed.

Click on the title above (York Uni username needed) to view a copy of the presentation given by the York Library & Archives Director at some briefings about this. The first few slides of the presentation are quite wordy but further slides give some ideas about possible layout, design and use. Any feedback or thoughts you might have concerning the Library space are welcome such as:
  • likes
  • dislikes
  • examples of libraries, or similar places, you've used and liked; and if so why
  • what you feel you need

Monday 22 December - Tuesday 23 December, 8.30am - 9.00pm
Wednesday 24 December, 8.30am - 12.30pm
Thursday 25 December - Thursday 1 January, CLOSED

Friday 2 January, 8.30am - 9.00pm
Saturday 3 January, 10.00am - 6.00pm
Sunday 4 January, CLOSED
Monday 5 - Friday 9 January, 8.30am - 9.00pm
Saturday 10 - Sunday 11 January, 10.00am - 9.00pm

The Library will be closed from 12.30pm Wednesday 24 December to 9am Friday 2 January inclusive. Normal term-time hours will resume on Monday 12 January.

Hull Uni: vacation borrowing

Longer loan items will be issued or can be renewed for the whole of the Christmas vacation from Monday 15 December 08, due back week commencing 19 January 09.
7 days loans and periodicals will remain at their normal loan period for the vacation although issuing or renewing for slightly longer if due back when the building is closed.
24 hours loans will also remain at their normal loan period during the vacation, items issued from 9 am on Tuesday 23 December 08 will be due back on Monday 5 January 09.

YH Library Hospital Info Point temp closure

Please note that the York Hosptial Library Information Point sited in the Hospital will be temporarily closed from today. The Information Point will reopen in the new year and in a new location to be advertised by the York Hospital Library team. In the meantime if you need help remember that the York Hospital Library team can be found on the first floor of the Fountains Learning Centre or contacted by emailing library@york.nhs.uk.

Scopus is currently subscribed to by the University of Hull Library for a one year period (and available via the HYMS Library tab).

The EQUATOR Network: facilitating transparent and accurate reporting of medical research

The EQUATOR Network is a new quality improvement initiative that seeks to enhance reliability of medical research literature by promoting transparent and accurate reporting of health research.
That goal will be achieved through:

  • raising awareness of the crucial importance of good reporting of research
  • becoming the recognised global centre providing resources and training relating to the reporting of health research and use of reporting guidelines
  • assisting in the development, dissemination and implementation of reporting guidelines
  • monitoring the status of the quality of reporting across health research literature
  • conducting research relating to the quality of reporting

York Library redesign - be involved

Vision for the re-development of the Computer Science space - briefing and consultation sessions
Stephen Town, the Director of the Library & Archives, will be running a series of briefing and consultation sessions in November to update staff and students on the Library’s vision for the re-development of the space in the Computer Science building when it becomes available in 2010/11 and the associated re-development and refurbishment of the JB Morrell Library.
These briefings are an opportunity for staff and students to provide your comments, feedback and other creative ideas on the plans.

The sessions will be held in the Raymond Burton Library seminar rooms on the following dates:

Tuesday 11th November, 11am-12pm
Wednesday 19th November, 2.30-3.30pm
Thursday 27th November, 3-4pm

These sessions are open to all staff and students. The Library will not be reserving places for these briefings, so please be aware that there is capacity for 60 people per session.

Chair of NICE on limits of RCTs and drug tests

Chairman Sir Michael Rawlins made the argument in a speech to the Royal College of Physicians. York Hospital intersite delivery service unavailable

Please note that the intersite return service to/from York Hospital Library is unavailable until future notice. If you are unable to visit the JB Morrell University library books can be returned to the Kings Manor Library in the centre of York (beside the Art Gallery).

York Uni Library: disruption to entrance area

This work is continuing between 25-26th September.

On 30th and 31st August, the Library entrance area will be closed to enable essential works to take place. On 30th August the Library will remain open, with entry available at the rear of the building. The Library will be closed on the 31st as it is closed on Sundays during the summer vacation.

Replace your photocopy card at York Uni Library

Old photocopy cards will no longer work on York Library photocopiers. Credit on old cards can be transferred to new cards. Click on the title above for more information.

York Uni Library - works

Starting this week work on the JB Morrell groundfloor will be taking place over the summer. This will involve the relocation of the enquiries desk and the establishment of a 'comfortable seating' area in time for term. The Library will remain open as usual.

YH Library catalogue - coa

As from 1st August the records for York Hospital Library will no longer be available via the University of York catalogue. They will be available instead via that of York St John. This is part of the Hospital Library part-relocation to York St John's (see http://www.york.ac.uk/library/news/index.htm#ydh for further information).


This new catalogue link will be made available on the Library tab on the new VLE.

Scopus and BioMed: good and bad news

Good news: Scopus
Scopus is now available via the University of Hull Library (Hull Athens account required). A link will be available via the Library tab on the new HYMS VLE but in the meantime you can access the resource by going to http://library.hull.ac.uk/screens/erm_index.html. (Select Login > Athens Login from the Scopus screen.)

The subscription for Scopus is currently for one year only with a view to evaluating usage and feedback in the hope that the University will agree funding for a longer term so if you find Scopus useful please feedback to library@hyms.ac.uk.

The database covers a wide range of subject areas including scientific, technical, medical and social sciences literature.

Bad news: BioMed Image Archive
Please note that the Biomed Image Archive (http://www.brisbio.ac.uk/index.html) will no longer be available after 31 July 2008 as it is being withdrawn by the University of Bristol and partners due to technical and support issues.

York Athens accounts to be replaced - one username less

A reminder that York will now primarily being using a "Federated Access Management" system and not Athens. Your York Athens account will still work but you may now enter resources via a screen and be prompted for your "Institutional" or "Shibboleth" login and/or theattached (Doc1.doc) screen at which point you should enter your York network account.

This does not affect Hull e-resources which will still be fully accessible only via Hull Athens.
