Merry Christmas and a happy new year from HYMS Library...but before you go...

Borrowing while you’re away
If you are going home over the Christmas vacation but still want to access books you can use the SCONUL Access scheme. This enables you to use the resources of other university libraries over the vacation, on production of your university card. If you're an undergraduate you can use the libraries for reference. If you're a postgraduate you may also be able to borrow items.
Find out more:

See
SCONUL Access for more information. Information about the scheme is also available from Hull and York.
  • University of Hull library borrowing over the Christmas period
  • Normal loan items will issue for the Christmas vacation from Monday 16 December 2013, they will be due back w/c Monday 13 January 2014.
All other items will remain at their normal loan periods but will issue for longer to cover the actual building closure.
24 hours loan items will issue for the closure on Tuesday 24 December 2013 and will be due back on Thursday 2 January 2014.
Vacation loans do not apply to Associate and SCONUL members.
  • University of York library borrowing over the Christmas period

You can continue to renew books for 28 days over the Christmas vacation and will be sent courtesy notices seven days before the items are due back asking you to renew your items.
Please note that you will need to return your books if they have been requested by another user. If an item is requested you will be sent a recall notice which will give you seven days to return the item. More information on borrowing and returning books over the vacation is available here: http://www.york.ac.uk/library/news/archive/2013/christmas/

"Nobel winner declares boycott of top science journals"

"Randy Schekman, a US biologist who won the Nobel prize in physiology or medicine this year and receives his prize in Stockholm on Tuesday, said his lab would no longer send research papers to the top-tier journals, Nature, Cell and Science....

Schekman said pressure to publish in "luxury" journals encouraged researchers to cut corners and pursue trendy fields of science instead of doing more important work...

A journal's impact factor is a measure of how often its papers are cited, and is used as a proxy for quality. But Schekman said it was 'toxic influence' on science that 'introduced a distortion'..."

"It is going to look brilliant – the best redeveloped university library in this country!"

 and we believe it!

The ground and first floor of the tower block may be closing but there's more new space available as part of the refurbishment - with temporary access through the Reading Room.

The ground floor of the tower and new south entrance are due to open in April with completion of the Brynmor Jones refurbishment in June.

The following leaflet, providing more information about facilties and timescales is available at http://www2.hull.ac.uk/lli/PDF/LibraryRedevelopmentLeaflet.pdf:

University of Hull: Brynmor Jones Library redevelopment latest news

·         The first and second floors of the east building (at the front of the Library) are now open. These spaces contain informal seating areas, three group study rooms with AV equipment, and PCs

·         The second floor of the east building contains three rooms that will eventually be used for teaching.  For the time being they have been temporarily equipped as PC rooms.  70 PCs are available in these rooms from today.  This will help to compensate for the loss of PCs on the ground and first floors of the tower

·         Access to the newly-opened parts of the east building will be via the Reading Room for the next four months until the new lifts and staircase at the centre of the Library become available.  Signage will be put in place and library staff will be on hand to guide users

·         The ground floor is now closed and the first floor of the tower will close on Wednesday 11 December.  Access to the lifts and stairs will be maintained.  There will also be continued access to the Law books on the first floor.

·         During this phase of the redevelopment there will be fewer user spaces in the Library than at any other stage of the project.  To compensate for this, PC rooms and study spaces are being booked elsewhere on campus for the use of students during the examination period.  Further details will be announced shortly.  The availability of space will improve rapidly once further floors in the tower begin to re-open from the beginning of February onwards

·         Users of the Library should note that with the closure of the first and ground floors of the tower, no food or drinks other than cold bottled drinks will be allowed into the Library.  The ground floor of the tower, where this restriction will not apply, will re-open in April, along with the new 80-seat cafe

When’s it happening?

·         The 1st and 2nd floors of the east building are now open

·         The  ground and first floor of the tower will close during the week commencing the 9th December

Planning your research: assignment calculator

If you're involved in a longer piece of research then the "Assignment Calculator" from Gulf Coast State College is quite a nice reality check about how you should be timetabling the various parts of your work.

Note that some of the hyperlinks will not be HYMS relevant/available - but you should find alternatives for most via either the homepages of the two Universities or our own HYMS Library pages at http://libguides.hull.ac.uk/medicine .
