New study workshops now available - and suggestions sought

A list of workshops available as part of York's Digital Wednesdays sessions are now available at

Hull are interested in feedback as to what workshop and webinar sessions students would like them to run this term (and in general). If you've any requests or suggestions re sessions and timing let us know at library@hyms.ac.uk and we'll pass it on, or contacts the Hull Skills Team directly at skills@hull.ac.uk. If you've thoughts about what and when you'd like to see at the York end too let us know and we'll share with colleagues there as well.

Post Graduate Skills Development

If you're a HYMS post grad then this autumn we have some treats for you! Whether you want to sharpen your skills or learn something new; there's support at Hull and York with sessions covering everything from open access publishing to computing for research, and everything in between. 

York are running PG Wednesdays: Staff from across the University run most of the sessions and they also provide opportunities for you to get involved, for example to showcase your own research or talk about your ‘top tips’ for research practice. PG Wednesdays run every Wednesday afternoon. The 2016-17 programme starts on Wednesday 5 October 2016 and runs through to Wednesday 27 September 2017.

At Hull you can check out the PG Skills Development Programme which provides development opportunities for postgraduate students (taught/research), researchers and staff.

Also coming up at Hull is a credited module on Research Data Management

OSCE Information Search Revision Material

It was great to see the first years that came to our pre OSCE drop-in. If you missed the session or would just like a recap then take a look at the HYMS library webpages this page has everything you need for revision including mini-tutorials covering Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT), truncation and wild cards (or truncat* and “w?ld cards” if we are being clever about it). There’s also the updated Medline tutorial and the IS2 workbook on this page too. Take a look at these over the next couple of weeks and make sure that you are familiar with the skills contained in the various guides available to you. Good luck everyone!

Postgraduates: are you ready to learn some new skills?

Postgraduate study is a step up from undergraduate study and requires more in depth skills. The Universities of York and Hull provide a suite of workshops and courses designed to help taught and research postgraduates develop skills that will help them meet the challenges of research at this level.
