MBBS Year 1 Revision List Available Now

Revision, revision, revision, oh actually that’s repetition, sorry. Well it’s coming up to exam time and deciding which resources to use to help you revise, can feel a bit repetitive, not in a Campbell’s soup-can arty way either, just plain, boring, dull, hell. Not that revision resources intrinsically hold those negative qualities, essentially, they are quite good, but, knowing what’s useful, or what resources you feel have real impact or value on your revision strategy is essential.

Thankfully you told us, many thanks to Lucy Adams, library rep extraordinaire, for compiling a list of all the resources you have found most useful. Being library bods and in the business of sharing we thought we’d make these available to you in the HYMS MBBS Year 1 area (you’ll need to login to Blackboard first, you can find the list on the left-hand menu).

If you want to take some time out from revising there’s always the city of culture on the doorstep too. The National Portrait Gallery are exhibiting Paul Smith to JK Rowling, sadly there’s no pop art in there though.

By jove ... another fantastic resource available to HYMS staff and students

Have you ever read an article and thought to yourself: ' I'd like to see how that is actually done?"

Well, now you can, the Journal of Visualised Experiments is a unique resource: there are hundreds of recorded experiments and lab tests, supported by high quality videos and images, including supporting articles. Not only does this make replicating experiments easier, but in terms of learning and teaching it is transformative - each article comes with a lovely reference friendly doi link that you can slot straight into your essays or reading lists, if Box of Broadcasts did lab work this would be it! Currently, the folks at JoVE are also running a competition open to MBBS, post-grad and post-doctoral students and faculty ($3k cash prize), all you have to do is create a 2 minute film (we all saw the mannequin challenge we know you've got the directorial skills) of a scientific experiment or technique, if you're interested, JoVE have a competition entry page. So how do we get to this lovely resource, I hear you cry? Well as always we've placed it up on the HYMS Library page JoVE lives in the Image and Videos section, as does Box of Broadcasts if you were wondering what all that was about. Wrote TS Eliot in the Love Song of J Alfred Prufrock. Next year you could well encounter similar snatches of conversation from people visiting the Brynmor Jones Library at Hull, which throughout January and February, is hosting  Lines of thought: Drawing from Michelangelo to now. The exhibition will feature works from some of the greatest artists, from Dürer to Degas, Michelangelo to Matisse and Rembrandt to Riley. The exhibition is free to attend during January and February at the University, as part of Hull UK City of Culture 2017. Post Graduate Skills Development

If you're a HYMS post grad then this autumn we have some treats for you! Whether you want to sharpen your skills or learn something new; there's support at Hull and York with sessions covering everything from open access publishing to computing for research, and everything in between. 

York are running PG Wednesdays: Staff from across the University run most of the sessions and they also provide opportunities for you to get involved, for example to showcase your own research or talk about your ‘top tips’ for research practice. PG Wednesdays run every Wednesday afternoon. The 2016-17 programme starts on Wednesday 5 October 2016 and runs through to Wednesday 27 September 2017.

At Hull you can check out the PG Skills Development Programme which provides development opportunities for postgraduate students (taught/research), researchers and staff.

Also coming up at Hull is a credited module on Research Data Management

Post Graduate Workshops in Statistics

Statistics, data collection and analysis, predictive analytics; whatever you want to call it, if you are using statistics in your research, then you may well want to take advantage of a series of statistics workshops  run by the University of York's Maths Skills Centre. The workshops are running from April- June 2016 for all postgraduate students.   

The 4 workshops being offered (all on Wednesday afternoons - see website for dates & more details) are:

An Introduction to SPSS

Descriptive Statistics and Exploratory Analysis

Using Graphs and Measures of Association

Confidence Intervals & Hypothesis Testing

Feedback suggests that these workshops have been useful complements to courses available in departments and they have become very popular. There are limited places available so if you are interested we recommend that you sign up to the workshops as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. York and Hull Get The Director's Cut Treatment

The University of York Library has had the director's cut treatment. Take a look at this video showcasing some of the services and resources available to HYMS students to make your University life easier, more enriched, more successful and more fun. Library System Upgrade

The Brynmoor Jones library at Hull are getting their techy screwdrivers out to  upgrade the library management system today, starting at 4pm and ending at 10pm. During the period of the upgrade, students and staff should borrow books via one of the Library help points. 

Library accounts will be inaccessible during this time, so make sure that you have renewed your books that are due back today before 4pm, and any other essential library account activities.

The Library Catalogue will continue to be available.

The move to the new system, called Sierra, will mean a more joined up relationship with other campus systems and ultimately lead to a better experience for staff and students; so it’s a short bit of pain for some long term gain.

Reference management workshops at the University of York

 

The University of York will be running EndNote Online workshops towards the end of the Autumn term. Steph Jesper from HYMS Library will be one of the tutors involved, so this is an ideal opportunity for HYMS students to learn a bit about how to get the most out of reference management software.

The workshops will be taking place on:

• Wednesday 2 December 14:00-16:00 LFA/015

Official opening of the Brynmor Jones Library at the University of Hull 16 September 2015

Today marked the official opening of the Brynmor Jones Library at the University of Hull, with an opening ceremony in the exhibition space on the ground floor of the library. The ceremony was led by the poet laureate, Carol Ann Duffy who holds an honorary doctorate at the University. The poet unveiled a plaque commemorating the occasion.

The Brynmor Jones Library underwent a redevelopment beginning in September 2012 which has transformed the building in terms of what students spaces are available and refreshing the technological infrastructure for the 21st Century.

The exhibition space features a display of images from the building's history with explanatory notes which will be available to view until the end of October.

Brynmor Jones Library update: silent study space

In response to student feedback on the need for extra silent study space, the Brynmor Jones Library has created extra silent study space in the west side of the Second Floor outside the postgraduate lounge for the period until 23 January. Both the Morrell library at University of York and the Brynmor Jones Library at University of Hull are open 24/7 for your study needs.

The Brynmor Jones Library has also created extra silent study space on the 2nd Floor in response to student feedback.

Christmas 2014 opening at the University Libraries

Merry Christmas from HYMS Library! The University libraries will be closed during the following periods:

At the University of York, the library will be closed 4pm Wed 24 December 2014 to 8am Sat 27 December 2014, and 4pm Wed 31 December 2014 to 8am Fri 2 January 2015. University of York items are subject to recall throughout the vacation, but there are no due dates between 20 December 2014 and 4 January 2015. If you need to renew any items you have out from the University of York for the Christmas period, full details are available at http://www.york.ac.uk/library/borrowing/#tab-5.

At the University of Hull, the library will be closed from 12.30pm Wed 24 December 2014 to 9am on 3rd January 2015. No items will be due during this period. University of Hull network maintenance work: Sunday 14th December 9am-12pm

Essential maintenance; Internet disruption on 14 December

What/When?: Due to essential work to be undertaken by JANET engineers and assisted by ICT staff, the University of Hull’s internet connection will be ‘at risk’ from 09:00 until 12:00 on the morning of Sunday 14 December. There may also be a prolonged loss of connection of up to an hour between these times.

Why?: Following the serious outage on 7 October affecting the Yorkshire region, JANET have redesigned their network to improve resilience. This work will connect the University to this new, more robust network.

What does this mean for me?: You may experience breaks in internet connectivity on the University of Hull campus during the period. This is unlikely to cause any serious issues unless you are entering text into external websites. As a precaution, we would advise against carrying out any commercial transactions during this period.

It is advisable anyway to create any lengthy text locally and then cut and paste this into web sites. This guards against normal disconnections that may occur on web sites and will also mitigate any effects of this disruption.

Brynmor Jones Library Redevelopment update

·         The remainder of the ground floor, excluding the east entrance, gallery and exhibition space, is now open.  This includes Teaching Rooms 1 & 2, soft seating, quick print PCs and the remainder of the Welcome Desk turnstiles.  The Library and Learning Innovation Training Rooms are also situated in this area.  Contractors are currently commissioning the AV in the teaching and training rooms and they will be in use from Monday 17 November.

·         The gallery and exhibition space are due to be handed over week commencing 24 November.  It will then be possible to start moving the University Art Collection into the new gallery.

·         The redevelopment of the original east entrance is due to be completed in the course of December.

External works, excluding the area around the BAM compound and site offices, should be finished by the end of this month, at which point the fences will be removed.
