J B Morrell Library refurbishment on schedule for completion Spring term 2012!

University of York Library users will be pleased to know that an end to the disruption is at last in sight: all aspects of the refurbishment are on schedule for completion in 10 weeks' time. The next significant milestone will be the reopening of the ground floor link between the JB Morrell Library and the Harry Fairhurst building, scheduled for Monday 19th December.

Further information about the new facilities to be installed during the Spring term is available on the Library website. Forthcoming developments include a new ground floor cafe, and additional quiet study space on the JBM first floor.

Disruption to services in the Brynmor Jones Library



On Saturday 17 December you will not be able to renew or return items in the Brynmor Jones Library and there will be no access to the library catalogue. You will be able to borrow items with standard loan periods and use short loan items in the library. This is due to the planned disruption of ICT services.


Where possible please ensure that you borrow, return or renew any items before 21:00 on Friday 16 December.

From 16:00 Monday 19 December to 16:00 Tuesday 20 December the same disruption to services will occur due to essential IT maintenance.

Brynmor Jones Library: Library catalogue and self-service issue and returns unavailable 19th-20th December

Library and Learning Innovation will be replacing the Brynmor Jones Library server with a new machine on 19th December. This work will start at 4pm on 19th December and the system will be unavailable for 24 hours until 4pm on 20th December. During this time there will be no access to the library catalogue or the self-service issue and return facilities. A basic issue service will be available from the circulation desk. All other computing facilities within the Brynmor Jones Library will be working as normal.

This work will also affect services at the Keith Donaldson Library in Scarborough in the same way.

We apologise for any inconvenience which may be caused by this work.

Resolved: UoY journals and databases: current access problems

The access problems to UoY journals and databases now appear to be resolved.

UoY journals and databases: current access problems

Following the power outage at the UoY yesterday, there are currently problems accessing various electronic resources such as databases (including OvidSP Medline) and journals. THe HYMS cross search facilities for journals and ebooks are also affected.

The problem should be resolved soon but in the meantime please try either 'googling' directly for a resource (as it is the UoY routing which is creating current difficulties) or access via the UoH Library links available at http://libguides.hull.ac.uk/medicine.

ICT disruption, 16-18th Dec affecting UoH, HRI, Castle Hill...

FYI, see bold below inparticular:

The University Senior Management Group (SMG) have approved plans to install two new backup generators that will supply emergency power to the Applied Science and Foss data centres in the event of a failure to the primary electrical supply. This work will start at midnight on Friday the 16th of December and will not be completed until 04:00 on Sunday the 18th of December.

Once the work has been completed, the new generators will provide essential resilience and data security for the Applied Science and Foss data centres. In the event of any future disruption to the electrical supply, existing devices within the data centres will provide battery power to all servers and systems whilst the backup generators are brought online. These new generators will then provide all the power required to maintain services for the duration of the power outage and this will be of significant benefit to the whole University community.


Unfortunately, major ICT infrastructure work such as this does come at a cost and as a result, from midnight on Friday the 16th of December until 04:00 on Sunday the 18th of December staff from the ICT Department will have to close down all major ICT services. In practical terms this will mean the loss of all :

• ICT services on the Hull campus. This also includes ICT services accessed through the: 
• Student residential network
• University satellite sites at Castle Hill, Hull Royal Infirmary, the Brocklehurst Building, Oriel Chambers, Blaydes House and the Hull History Centre.
• Internet access to and from the Scarborough campus, HYMS, the HYMS Education Centre at Hull Royal Infirmary
• Telephone services on the West campus
• Hull-based HYMS IT services, including file store, remote access and most websites (including parts of the HYMS VLE)

As can be seen from the above list this essential upgrade to our resilience levels does have a wide impact with regards to the number of ICT services affected and, as a result, the work has been deliberately scheduled out of term time to lessen the impact on users of these services as much as possible. One consequence of this is that work that the Facilities Directorate would have been carrying out in the Venn building, and which had been scheduled for the weekend 3rd-4th of December, has now been rescheduled to take place alongside the work detailed above. As a result of this there will be no electrical power available within the Venn building during the period described above.

The ICT Department and the Facilities Directorate would like to apologise in advance for the disruption that this, and the work in Venn, work will cause to our customers but trust that you can all appreciate the important benefits that the improved levels of resilience will offer. UoY Library: New location of self-service terminals and temporary route to Key Texts

Self-service terminals
Now that the hoardings around the bottom of the main staircase in the JB Morrell Library have been removed, we can provide dedicated space in this area for self-service terminals for borrowing and returning books. The terminals formerly provided on the first floor and adjacent to the main entrance have been relocated.

Temporary route to Key Texts
Library users heading for the Key Texts collection, the Raymond Burton Library or the Borthwick Institute for Archives will notice that the route through the hoardings is now slightly different. Follow the signs into the glass-fronted room next to the helpdesk (this room will become a permanent new home for Key Texts in due course), and out through the rear into the RBL lobby. Go through the turnstile on your right into Key Texts, or up the stairs to the RBL and Borthwick.

UoY staff: University card takes over from the library card 5 Dec 2011

On 5th December the  [UoY] Library will be switching over to using the new staff University cards for library borrowing.

Staff with library card and a new University card:

From 5th December your old library card will no longer work and you should use your new University card to borrow books.

This change will happen automatically and your library record and current loans will not be affected. Please note that the new University cards also now link to York Print Plus accounts for photocopying and printing.

Staff not currently registered with the Library:

Library membership is available to all staff and your new style staff University card is automatically registered as your library card.

Associate Staff:

Associate staff will not automatically be issued with a new style University card. Old style library cards will continue to work for all associate staff and there is no automatic update taking place.

If you are an associate member of staff and have a new style University card please come to the Library Help desk and we will activate it.

Due to the complexity of associate registrations we are advising that individuals should visit the Help desk in the library for personalised information about what to do. The Library Help desk is open 9am-9.45pm Monday to Friday and 10-6 on Saturday and Sunday.

University of York: new Library helpdesk now open

The new helpdesk on the ground floor of the JB Morrell Library opened to users for the first time on Friday afternoon. For all enquiries and services during staffed opening hours, please ask at the new helpdesk, close to the new main entrance and exit. During "self-service" opening hours, the helpdesk is not staffed.


A reminder of other changes to the JBM ground floor during the current phase of work:

•Self-service terminals for borrowing books are located on the first floor, in a room adjacent to the display of current newspapers and the Law (J) collections. A self-service terminal for returning books is sited just inside the main entrance on the ground floor.

•To return books when the Library is closed, deposit them in the purple box outside the main entrance.

•Books awaiting reshelving can be found in open rooms at the rear of the first and second floors, close to the service lift.

•The ground floor North Rooms remain open - compact shelving for printed journal archives, less well-used book collections and UK government publications. Follow the signs through the hoardings for access to the North Rooms.

•Government publications on microform, plus reading equipment, have been moved to the Raymond Burton Library Reading Room on the first floor.

•Public lockers are now located on the ground floor of the Raymond Burton Library, in the room next door to Key Texts. Ask for a locker key at the new helpdesk.

•Public toilets on the ground floor of the JB Morrell Library will reopen today. Additional ground floor toilets can be found at the bottom of the stairs to the upper floors of the Raymond Burton Library.

In some cases these new locations are permanent (including the helpdesk), but other services and facilities will move again when the ground floor refurbishment is complete. Thanks for your patience; keep following the JBM's refurbishment blog for further information.

Postgraduate facilities at UoY Harry Fairhurst Building (aka the Library)

Postgraduate Study Provision in the University Library

As part of the Library refurbishment significant investment has been made in improving study space provision for research postgraduates. Specifically we offer:

Research Study and Lounge
Located on the top floor of the Harry Fairhurst Building the Research Study and Lounge offers a mix of study space exclusively for use by research postgraduates. The area includes relaxed seating and more formal study desks complete with Wifi and power points for charging laptops. Lockers are also available in this area for daily use. To register for a key to access the Research Lounge or to borrow a daily use locker please enquire at Help & Information in the JB Morrell Library.

Individual Postgraduate Studies

From October 2011 the Library is making available nine individual studies on the 1st floor of the JB Morrell Library. These will be let for approx a term at a time, to qualifying research postgraduates. To apply for one of these rooms please send your name, email address, department and year of study to jackie.knowles@york.ac.uk by Friday 21st October 2011. Successful applicants will be contacted with their room allocations during w/b 23rd October and others will be kept on a waiting list. A £5 deposit will be payable on collection of the key.

"The InterTASC Information Specialists' Sub-Group (ISSG) is the group of information professionals supporting research groups within England and Scotland providing technology assessments to the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE).


The InterTASC Information Specialists' Sub-Group Search Filter Resource is a collaborative venture to identify, assess and test search filters designed to retrieve research by study design. The Search Filters Resource aims to provide easy access to published and unpublished search filters. It also provides information and guidance on how to critically appraise search filters, study design filters in progress and information on the development and use of search filters. Inclusion of a search filter is not an endorsement of its validity or a recommendation."

JBM first floor book moves - schedule

The refurbishment of the north side of the first floor of the JB Morrell Library is currently ahead of schedule, and the transfer of books onto new shelving will begin this Friday (9th September). While books are in transit, Library staff will offer a retrieval service. Please note that during this work other sections of shelving on the south side of the first floor (including Medicine (Y)) will be rearranged, to make use of the increased space. Access to these collections will, however, be maintained throughout.

Disruption to computing services at the Scarborough campus: 2nd – 5th September

Work is currently underway on the Scarborough campus to provide a large and modern science lab in the Worsley building. In order to ensure that the lab is ready for the new semester, major electrical works will be taking place over the coming weekend and as a result it will be necessary to close down all computer systems within the Scarborough data centre at 4pm on Friday the 2nd of September. The work will take the whole weekend to complete and it is expected that normal computing services will be restored by 9am on Monday morning.

University of York: Noisy work on JB Morrell Library first floor next week

Library staff have just received notification that some unforeseen noisy work on the north side of the JB Morrell Library first floor will need to take place next week. Contractors will be cutting through concrete, so it's likely that the noise will affect other areas of the building.

Work is scheduled to begin on Tuesday 30th August and be completed on Friday 2nd September between the hours of 6:00am and 4:00pm, with the noisiest work taking place before the Library opens each morning. It's essential that this work is carried out as soon as possible in order to reopen the first floor on 16th September.

Remember that quiet study space is available close by in the Harry Fairhurst building and Raymond Burton Library. The opening hours for all Library sites over the August bank holiday weekend can be found on the Library website.

University of York: More information about JB Morrell first floor in September

The area on the north side of the first floor of the JB Morrell Library which is currently closed to users is on schedule to reopen 16th September. Following the installation of shelving in the week beginning 5th September, most book collections on the first floor will be moved to new permanent locations on the same floor.


It's likely that the whole first floor will be closed to Library users for most of the week beginning 12th September in order to complete the book moves as quickly as possible. Library staff will offer a retrieval service from the ground floor desk. Further information will be provided via this blog as soon as arrangements are confirmed.

University of York: Scheduled developments for the JB Morrell Library first floor in September

The closed area on the first floor of the JB Morrell Library is scheduled to reopen to Library users on Monday 16th September 2011. In the run-up to this date, it's likely that access to the first floor book collections (most social science subjects, plus Psychology, Health and Medicine) will be limited. Library staff will offer a book retrieval service.

Improvements to the Brynmor Jones Library, University of Hull

Temporary closure of Foss 24 hour facility (Hull)

On 7th July the central PC room in Foss, with 50 computers, will be closed between 25th – 29th July, when all the computers in the facility will be upgraded, moved into new slim-line cases and mounted under the desks in order to free up more desk space for student use.




This means that during the week 25th – 29th July the whole of the Foss 24 hour facility will be unavailable. Unfortunately, a combination of the use of external contractors, noise, dust and the general nature of the upgrade and refurbishment makes this short closure unavoidable. The Larkin 24 Hour facility will remain in operation however and has 24 PCs available for use. The entrance to the Larkin 24 Hour facility can be found opposite the main entrance to the Ferens building, just off the short path that runs between Larkin and the Graduate School. (In between buildings 25 and 32 in square E3 of the University campus map)

Closure of link between JB Morrell Library and Harry Fairhurst Building

During the refurbishment of the south side of the ground floor of the JB Morrell Library (18 July-November 2011), the link connecting the Library to the Harry Fairhurst Building will be closed and both buildings will operate independently of each other.

The temporary Fairhurst entrance will be situated at the South West side of the Harry Fairhurst Building (by the external lift and staircase). The entrance to the Library maintains its current position.

The Harry Fairhurst building opened on 26th April after an extensive refurbishment of the former Computer Science building. Offering a welcoming and stimulating environment for learning and research, it provides over 500 new study spaces for students and researchers. If you wish to find out more about the building and see what facilities are available, tours will be taking place at 15:15 on the following dates over the summer vacation:

Computer facilities at the University of Hull

Foss 24 Hour Facility Unavailable 4th July until 23rd September


Would all staff and students on the Hull campus please be aware that the Foss 24 hour facility will be unavailable between the 4th July and the 23rd September 2011.

Whilst 24 hour computing facilities will continue to be available in the Larkin 24 hour room the Information and Communications Technology Department would like to apologise for any inconvenience that this temporary reduction in our open access computer provision may cause. Staff within the ICT Department will monitor usage of the computers in the Larkin 24 hour room throughout this period and will endeavour to make additional PCs available should demand so warrant.

University of York Library: Construction work scheduled for summer vacation

The J B Morrell Library refurbishment project is scheduled to move into Phase 6 immediately after the end of the summer term: refurbishment of the ground floor of the Library to include a brand new entrance, staffed service areas and a larger cafe.

All Library services will be maintained while the ground floor refurbishment is underway, but some relocation will be necessary. Importantly, the Key Texts collection will be housed in the seminar rooms on the ground floor of the Raymond Burton Library between July-December 2011.

Freshers cafe and the internal link between the Library and Harry Fairhurst building will be closed from July while work on the Library’s ground floor is underway. There will be a temporary entrance to the Harry Fairhurst building until the link is reopened.

Changes to the Brynmor Jones Library, Hull

Library and Learning Innovation will be making improvements to services on the ground and first floor of the BJL for the start of the new session.  These changes will bring immediate benefits to Library users ahead of the major redevelopment of the BJL which the University now proposes to undertake.  They also respond to a number of the suggestions put forward by Hull University Union in its ‘Developing a vision for the future of the library’ campaign.   The changes to take place this summer will include the introduction of more public access PCs on the ground floor and the provision of a new space for informal group study on the first floor of the tower block.  The layout of service points on the ground floor will also be changing to improve the user experience.  More details here http://bit.ly/mctkZS

Hull Library System Maintenance

It is necessary to do some urgent maintenance on the Library system on Thursday 16th June starting at 10am. It is hope that the work will be completed by 11am. During this time there will be no access to the system for circulation or other library functions, including library catalogues. Apologies for any inconvenience.

J B Morrell Library: south side of first floor now open

The newly refurbished south side of the J B Morrell Library's first floor has opened. Book stock previously located on the north side of the floor (including the Y section: Medicine) has been moved to this area and is accessible to users.

Fines Amnesty at Hull Royal Infirmary and Castle Hill Hospital Libraries

Sophos warning message on University of York website

Users of Sophos on supported or unsupported machines will currently be seeing a warning message when they visit pages within the University of York website. The message states that "Access has been blocked to "www.google-analytics.com/ga.js" as 'Mal/HTMLGen-A' has been found at this website."

This message is being generated because Sophos's automatic systems have mistakenly blocked content at google-analytics.com, which is used on the University of York's website to analyse web traffic. More information can be found at:

A fix is being applied by Sophos, and the problem does not prevent access to the website.

York University Library – access to Medical books

Between the 6th and 9th June the University of York Library will be operating a retrieval service for books held in the Y section (Medicine). The Library is aware that this is scheduled during the revision period and is thus providing an on-demand retrieval service to minimise the impact on users. Students may, however, also wish to consider taking any texts they feel they may need for their revision in advance of the 6th. Please see below for further details:



First Floor Book Stock Moves – 6 to 10 June 2010


The Library is preparing to move the book stock on the first floor to enable the next stage of the refurbishment to start. From 6 June books will be moved from their current location on the North side of the first floor to the newly refurbished South side. The South side will remain closed to Library users until the stock move is complete; access to books will be via an instant on-demand retrieval service run from the Lending Services desk on the ground floor. The estimated completion date is 10 June. A detailed schedule of each day’s moves will be published nearer the time. The subjects affected by the moves are:

New NHS Evidence website

A new version of NHS Evidence has been launched. Features include:

• Browsable A-Z pages for medicines and for selected clinical areas. The A-Z medicines pages are based on BNF entries and include prescribing information, best practice guidance and information for the public. The A-Z clinical topics include information on guidance and ongoing research.

• New NICE pathways which bring together different types of NICE guidance on a topic.

• Links to the original journals and databases pages.

Case histories: the poetry of medicine

This weekend saw the announcement of the winners of the 2011 Hippocrates Prize for Poetry and Medicine. An extract from Mark Lawson, in the Guardian (7/05/11), comments:

The single procedure most commonly described was open brain surgery with the patient conscious and responding, perhaps because, visually and spiritually, this is medicine at its most cutting-edge. However, ominously for readers from any perspective, the most recurrent subject was the experience of feeding or cleaning a terminally ill patient, with Alzheimer's being the most featured disease.

The new Harry Fairhurst building opens today offering:

Research Postgrad student facilities at the new Hary Fairhurst building, UoY

The new Harry Fairhurst building at York provides a specific Research Study & Lounge facility on the second floor for Research Postgrad Students. The Study & Lounge will be accessible via a keycard (available from Help & Information in the JB Morrell Library from the end of this week), allowing researchers a specialist area where they can work as well as an informal space to relax in.

As well as these specific facilites, Research Postgraduate Students will be able to make use of other facilities in the building, including:

• Wi-Fi throughout


• 55 seater IT classroom

J.B. Morrell Library - first floor open again

Contractors have repaired the faulty fire alarm this morning and the first floor of the JB Morrell Library is now accessible to users. Apologies again for any disruption to your work.

From 8am Tuesday 29th March it will be necessary to close the first floor of the JB Morrell Library because the fire alarm is faulty. Library staff will operate a book retrieval service every hour. To request a book from the first floor (social sciences collections), please complete a form at the Lending Services counter on the ground floor, or email Lending Services staff. Items will be brought to the Key Texts area for you to collect at your convenience. Apologies for the short notice.

University of York Library - Opening of the Harry Fairhurst Building

On 26th April 2011 the Harry Fairhurst building will open, providing IT-rich study and research areas, linked directly to the JB Morrell Library. Students and researchers will have access to a large number of new spaces, including reading areas, group studies, open collaborative zones, specialist research areas, research hotels and a bookable PC classroom.

The IT Support Office, IT Training and Academic Liaison teams will be based on the first floor of the building alongside the E-learning Development and Learning Enhancement Teams, providing IT, study and research support.

The building will have WiFi access throughout and also include new printing and photocopying facilities.

University of York Library refurbishment: latest news

In preparation for the refurbishment of the JB Morrell Library ground floor which is scheduled to start in July 2011, from Monday 21st March the main entrance area layout will be rearranged:

• One entry gate will be taken out of action. Visitors should enter and exit the building through the signed gate.
• Self-return machines will be moved to the far end of the ground floor open zone, near the doors which lead to the main JBM stairwell.
• The refurbishment notice board and plasma screen in the ground floor open zone will be temporarily removed.
• The Photocopying Office will remain open as normal, but access may be through a boarded area. Signs will be in place to show you the way.
• The Photographic Department office has already moved from the JB Morrell Library to a new office in the Raymond Burton Library, next door to the PC classroom on the ground floor.

Document Supply from the University of Hull

The British Library upgraded to Adobe 10 in mid February and since then Document Supply have had a problem providing Secure Electronic Delivery requests. Unfortunately, until this problem has been resolved Document Supply will not be able to supply SED requests and will revert to providing paper copies.

University of York Library: first floor closed

The first floor of the JB Morrell Library is closed due to an ongoing fire alarm on this floor. We are waiting for an engineer to come and fix the problem as soon as possible.

In the meantime we will be operating a book retrieval service every half hour to retrieve books from this floor.

OECD health data - easier access

The providers of OECD Health Data have recently made improvements to the method of access for this resource. You now no longer need to load OECD Health Data as an installed package but can access direct using your University of York e-account. The resource is listed under the medicine section of Metalib (available from the HYMS Library tab > Databases & EBM sources > Further databases via York University Library - or directly by clicking on the title above).

Delays to British Library Boston Spa services

The British Library stores some of its collections in storage buildings in Boston Spa, West Yorkshire.

In common with many buildings built at the same time, asbestos was used in the construction of the Boston Spa site, and the Library has a continuous programme of asbestos detection and removal. Recently, very small traces of asbestos were found in some areas. All air sampling tests have found there to be no health risk. However, the Library is taking sensible and responsible precautions to ensure the health and safety Readers, users and staff in full compliance with the very strict health and safety regulations applying to the management of asbestos.

This means that some areas of the Boston Spa site may be closed temporarily, and that some of our usual services may be unavailable.

The major asbestos removal works currently planned are expected to last for much of 2011. Up to 30% of the document supply collection may be affected, leading to items being unavailable in the St Pancras and Boston Spa Reading Rooms.

A list of affected material is currently being prepared and will be made available online soon. In the meantime, we would recommend that, wherever possible, you order material in advance to confirm its availability before travelling.

What journals do HYMS students and staff need? HYMS Journal Review

To ensure that we are aware of the needs of the Medical School, HYMS Library Committee would be grateful if you could take 15 minutes to ensure that we are aware of the titles needed for your teaching and research. This will help us make informed subscription decisions within our own budget and in relation to those of the two universities.

The survey is available at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/GR68BGQ. We would ask that you scan through the listed titles and respond where you have a specific recommendation either:

• because of the title's importance
• or, because you feel that the title has very little to contribute.

Please give as much supporting information as possible.

There is also the opportunity to:

• identify titles no longer needed
• and titles not held which you believe HYMS should prioritise if funds are available.

Both university libraries have been affected by the current economic situation; the University of York Library has recently undergone a review exercise resulting in the cut of 292 journal titles. This type of wider university decision has implications for HYMS if relevant titles subscribed to by other departments are cancelled. Therefore we need as full a picture of academic staff needs as possible.

The Consultation is available until 18th February 2011. There are 207 titles listed, available via one or other of the university libraries and previously identified as priorities by HYMS staff.

It should be noted that these journals are NOT all paid for by HYMS and may be available at only one university.

In Easter 2011 the Harry Fairhurst building will open, providing IT-rich study and research areas, linked directly to the JB Morrell Library. Students and researchers will have access to over 500 new spaces, including reading areas, group studies, open collaborative zones, specialist research areas, research hotels and a bookable PC classroom.

The IT Support Office, IT Training, VLE and Learning Enhancement Team and Academic Liaison Librarians will be based on the first floor of the building, offering easy access to IT, study and research support.

The building will have WiFi access throughout and also include new printing and photocopying facilities.

Third floor JB Morrell Library - now open

The newly-refurbished third floor of the JB Morrell Library is now open. As a result, the book retrieval service that was in operation throughout December has now ended.
