University of Hull, Brynmor Jones Library Redevelopment update
What’s going on?
·
The 2nd floor of
the east building and 6th floor of the tower will close for two
weeks from this Friday, 13th June. This will allow remedial
work connected with the removal of the external hoist to take place, and other
finishing work to be undertaken. There will be a book retrieval service
for material from the 6th floor during this period. A
microfilm reader has been temporarily relocated from 2nd floor east
to 1st floor east.
·
The east
staircase in the tower will be closed for refurbishment from next week.
At the same time the west staircase will be handed back. Both staircases
will be available for use in case of an emergency. The west staircase
will, however, not be available between the ground and 1st floors;
access to the 1st floor will be via the new lifts and staircase, the
opening of which is described below.
· The brand new South Entrance will open next
week. At the same time the library will also take possession of the new lifts and
staircase giving access from the ground floor to the 1st and 2nd
floors. This paves the way for the full integration of the two parts of
the Library at the end of the month. Library users will need their staff
and students cards to pass through the new turnstiles leading to the lifts and
stairs.
·
As soon as the
new South Entrance opens, the current main entrance and the temporary stairs to
the Reading Room on the south side of the building will close. This marks
the start of work on the final phase of the redevelopment.
·
A temporary book
return station will be installed on the 1st floor of the tower at
the information point; it will not be possible to return books on the ground
floor until that part of the redevelopment has been completed later this
summer. The security gates at the exit from the Reading Room will also go
live next week. Henceforth all books must be checked out before they are
taken out of the Reading Room. It will also now be necessary to check out
books from the tower before descending to the ground floor; this can be done using
the self issue machines on every floor.
When’s it happening?
·
Closure of the 6th
floor of the tower and 2nd floor east will take place on Friday 13th
June. All other changes will be happening next week – there will be a
further update confirming the exact dates.
