Cochrane Library loading MeSH update; reduced functionality, 30th January to 1 February 2015

On Friday 30th January 2015, the Cochrane Library (http://www.cochranelibrary.com) will update the MeSH Thesaurus to the latest version. Search functionality should return accurate results on Sunday 1st February, 2015.

While the MeSH update is in progress, users may see a slight difference in some search counts until this processing is complete. The Cochrane Library are recommending that searches are not performed during this period.

Users are advised to review any searches containing MeSH terms, after the release to ensure that they have the correct MeSH term.

MeSH term changes are available at the NLM site at http://www.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/whatsnew.html.

The Cochrane Library apologies for any inconvenience caused during the time of the update.

Lancet Respiratory Medicine and Lancet Haematology now available as ejournals

Lancet Respiratory Medicine and Lancet Haematology are now both available via Science Direct. Links are available via the Hull Electronic Journal List at http://zc7xc9dq8b.search.serialssolutions.com/ and will be available via the main Hull catalogue in February.

New books inc. eBooks of Wheater's and 2 new Oxford handbooks


 
We've been ordering new editions and more copies of items following reading list checks* and student feedback. Here's some highlights:
 
Oxford handbook clinical medicine - new edition available as an eBook via York and paper on order at both sites

Oxford handbook of neurology - new edition available as an eBook via Hull and paper on order at both sites

Wheater's Functional histology - new edition available as an eBook via Hull and paper on order both sites

We've also ordered additional copies of:
  • Lindsay's Neurology and neurosurgery
  • Oxford handbook of obstetrics & gynaecology
  • Oxford handbook of paediatrics
  • Oxford handbook of psychiatry
  • Oxford handbook of the Foundation Programme

at both university sites and these should be on the shelves soon.

Researcher Development: "Searching the Literature" Session at University of York - Monday 9th February

The University of York Library’s Research Support Team and Academic Liaison Librarians are delivering Searching the literature sessions as part of the Researcher Development training programme.

The session is specifically created for PhD students - particularly new PhD students who have just started undertaking their literature reviews - and for research staff. It includes opportunities for practical work using your own topics.

EndNote Online courses at York


 
The University of York will be running five generic EndNote Online courses over the next term.

EndNote Online is a web-based reference management application that enables collection of bibliographic information electronically. It also works in conjunction with Microsoft Word to help insert and format citations and reference lists. It is available for free and can be used on any computer with web access, including personally owned equipment.
 
You can book your place on one of the training sessions via the calendar on the HYMS Library Research tab ( http://libguides.hull.ac.uk/medicine/research ) where you can also find more about the program.
 
Steph Jesper from the HYMS Library Team will be co-delivering sessions and will be able to help with any questions you might have about how to use EndNote Online in conjunction with medical databases.

Hull Royal Infirmary Library - building works

Work is scheduled to take place between Tue 13th Jan and Fri 20th Feb 2015 at the Hull Royal Infirmary Library. Noise disruption is likely between 13th and 16th Jan but the Library should remain open throughout. This work is being undertaken as part of the drive to continually improve and update the environment of the library. Searching grey literature

Grey Literature is the term commonly used to refer to literature which has not yet been published. This type of material is often searched when conducting advanced literature searches including Systematic Reviews to ensure that the latest research and findings are included.

If you are looking for help and guidance on searching the grey literature two useful resources which may help you include:

  • Grey Matters - produced by the Canadian Agency for Drugs & Technologies in Health, Grey Matters includes a checklist of possible sites to consider and basic search tips for each one.
  • Open Grey - a multidisciplinary database bringing the resources of various European information partners together


Brynmor Jones Library update: silent study space

In response to student feedback on the need for extra silent study space, the Brynmor Jones Library has created extra silent study space in the west side of the Second Floor outside the postgraduate lounge for the period until 23 January. The Brynmor Jones Library is open 24/7 until the end of the summer exam period.

The Brynmor Jones Library has also created extra silent study space on the 2nd Floor in response to student feedback.
