Reference management workshops at the University of York

 

The University of York will be running EndNote Online workshops towards the end of the Autumn term. Steph Jesper from HYMS Library will be one of the tutors involved, so this is an ideal opportunity for HYMS students to learn a bit about how to get the most out of reference management software.

The workshops will be taking place on:

• Monday 16 November 15:00-17:00 LFA/015
• Tuesday 24 November 14:00-16:00 LFA/015
• Wednesday 2 December 14:00-16:00 LFA/015

BMJ Best Practice now available

BMJ Best Practice is now available via your University of Hull login. 

It's a decision-support tool designed for use at the point of care. Structured around the patient consultation, it aims to present the required information just as it's needed. 

There's fully referenced information on thousands of diagnoses and diagnostic tests, links to drug formularies, over 4,000 treatment guidelines, and hundreds of plain-language patient information leaflets.

To get started, follow the link to BMJ Best Practice. Once there, click Sign in and choose Shibboleth users go here. Select UK Access Management Federation for Education and Research (UK) and then choose University of Hull as the organisation you would like to sign in with. Enter your University of Hull login details if prompted. You should then have full access to the resource (and "Subscription provided by University of Hull" should appear at the top of the page).

You can access further personalisation features, such as bookmarking, annotation and alerts, by creating a My BMJ Best Practice account.

Cochrane Library loading MeSH update; reduced functionality, 30th January to 1 February 2015

On Friday 30th January 2015, the Cochrane Library (http://www.cochranelibrary.com) will update the MeSH Thesaurus to the latest version. Search functionality should return accurate results on Sunday 1st February, 2015.

While the MeSH update is in progress, users may see a slight difference in some search counts until this processing is complete. The Cochrane Library are recommending that searches are not performed during this period.

Users are advised to review any searches containing MeSH terms, after the release to ensure that they have the correct MeSH term.

Christmas 2014 opening at the University Libraries

Merry Christmas from HYMS Library! The University libraries will be closed during the following periods:

At the University of York, the library will be closed 4pm Wed 24 December 2014 to 8am Sat 27 December 2014, and 4pm Wed 31 December 2014 to 8am Fri 2 January 2015. University of York items are subject to recall throughout the vacation, but there are no due dates between 20 December 2014 and 4 January 2015. If you need to renew any items you have out from the University of York for the Christmas period, full details are available at http://www.york.ac.uk/library/borrowing/#tab-5.

At the University of Hull, the library will be closed from 12.30pm Wed 24 December 2014 to 9am on 3rd January 2015. No items will be due during this period. Access to eresources at University of Hull library

Since January, the Brynmor Jones Library has introduced Shibboleth as its main authentication method, replacing Athens.

For users of the service, this results in two major differences:

1.) You no longer need an Athens username and Password for the University of Hull, and will sign in with the IT login you received instead.

2.) When accessing resources off-campus you will no longer look for the Athens login but for an institutional login and may then need to select the UK Access Management Federation and University of Hull from dropdown menus.

If you have previously saved the urls of any electronic resources supplied by the University of Hull in your favourites, it may be that your Athens details will have been saved as well, and that when you try to login to that resource it takes you to the Athens login.

If this takes place, you may need to clear your web cache.

Web of Science: New Features

Web of Science is planning to reveal some new features on 13 July 2014. Details are available at http://wokinfo.com/media/pdf/wok_5_14_releasenotes.pdf.

These include being able to choose the number of search fields you can use in basic search, and the most current Medline data.

Acland's Anatomy access issues

Thanks to the students who have reported issues accessing Acland's using the Hull proxy server off campus. We have reported the problem and hope to have  this resolved soon. In the meantime you should be able to access on the HYMS network including via the HYMS portal. See http://help.hyms.ac.uk/students/helpsheets/external-access-to-hyms-it-services for information about the latter.

Technical issues with Shibboleth access to the JAMA Network

The JAMA Network, who provide access to the Journal of the American Medical Association amongst others, have sent the following message about access to their journals through the University of Hull Shibboleth: We are currently experiencing technical issues with Shibboleth authentication. As a result some users will, temporarily, be unable to access JAMA Network websites. We are working with our platform provider, Silverchair Information Systems, to restore the Shibboleth functionality. IP-based access is not affected and will still work. In the meantime, those needing a remote access solution can use the following URL/landing page:

The link on this landing page will serve as a means of access for your users in the interim. We apologize for the inconvenience and will inform you as soon as Shibboleth is up and running again.  Please contact us at  support@jamanetwork.com if you have any questions or concerns.

Annals of Vascular Surgery ejournal now available via University of Hull

The ejournal the Annals of Vascular Surgery is now available to access from the University of Hull e-subscriptions at http://zc7xc9dq8b.search.serialssolutions.com/?V=1.0&L=ZC7XC9DQ8B&S=T_AZ&C=A&N=100&B=2600. The journal will be linked to from the University of Hull library catalogue by the end of March. You will need your University of Hull account details to access this resource.

New journal titles available via the University of Hull

Two new journal titles are available via the University of Hull:

They are currently listed in the E-journal A-Z and will appear in the library catalogue from mid-March.

Simplifying access to electronic resources at the University of Hull: Athens to Shibboleth

In the week beginning 27th January University of Hull will be changing the authentication system used to provide access to ebooks and ejournals from Athens to Shibboleth. When logging in with Shibboleth, use your Hull IT userID and password instead of the one specific for Athens, meaning that you will drop the "hul" from your username when logging in.  If you are already logged into one of these services you will not need to login to e-resources again during the same web session.

To use Shibboleth, please look for this login option when visiting e-resources (it may also be labelled as 'Institutional login' or 'UK Federation', or similar), select 'University of Hull (Shibboleth)' from the list of institutions and log in as directed.  The Library Catalogue will also provide instructions where appropriate for different resources.  If you have any difficulties, please contact libhelp@hull.ac.uk.

While most resources will change to Shibboleth, there will still be some resources that use Athens and some that offer both Athens and Shibboleth for a while, but these will be phased out by 31 July 2014. Resources that are currently accessible through the library proxy server or using a generic username and password stored on the University of Hull portal will be unaffected by these changes.

Find It @ York - new pink buttons to access full text

The buttons which link you to the full text of articles at UoY from databases such as Medline have changed. When searching for journal articles available via UoY Library you will now see  links. Once you have clicked on this button, full-text electronic access is displayed under the View It tab (in some cases there may be access available from more than one source). Click on a provider's name to access the article. 

If the Library has print copies they will be listed under the Get It tab.

New research resource available

SAGE Research Methods Online is now available on the EBDM & Research page of the HYMS Library website (look under EBDM resources).

This resource contains a substantial collection of ebooks, journal articles, reference materials, videos and tools for exploring all aspects of the research process from identifying and understanding particular research methods to designing research projects, conducting research and writing up findings.

Included are SAGE's "Little Green Books" (the Quantitative Applications in the Social Sciences series) and "Little Blue Books" (the Qualitative Research Methods series).

You will need to use your York login details to access this resource.

Problem with off-campus Athens access to Proquest services via University of Hull

There is currently an issue with Athens access to services provided by Proquest via the University of Hull. On campus and using the University of Hull proxy server will still allow you access. Changes to the Cochrane

The Cochrane Library is changing how it publishes their systematic reviews online. From June, new systematic reviews will be added to the Cochrane Library when they are ready (called Publish When Ready) rather than the usual time once a Month.

Access Medline, Embase and many more via York

If you access Medline or Embase via York (as opposed to Hull) you can also access many other databases to help with your studies and broaden your medical horizons including:

• AMED (Allied and Contemporary Health Medicine)
•  HMIC (Health Management Information Consortium)
• PsycINFO (useful for mental health topics)

Simply log into Medline and Embase using your York Account details via the Find Articles & More tab on the HYMS Library pages to view the list of databases available to you.

As they are all provided by the same company (OvidSP) you can transfer your knowledge of and skills using Medline and Embase to the other databses.

DynaMed - now available to HYMS students

 

After receiving positive feedback on a trial of DynaMed in August 2012 - the Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust have purchased DynaMed and it is available to all HYMS students.

DynaMed is a clinical reference tool created by physicians for physicians and other health care professionals for use at the point-of-care. It is updated daily and summarizes the most current information on over 3,200 topics, it is ideal for answering most clinical questions during practice.

You will need to log in using your NHS Athens details.
