Brynmor Jones Library, University of Hull, redevelopment news - 21 August 2013



What’s going on?

·         The development of the new Reading Room on the 1st floor of the east building of the BJL is nearing completion.  In preparation for its opening in early September, the High Demand Collection (HDC) will be transferred from its current location on the 1st floor of the tower to the new Reading Room on 27th August.  A number of other collections will move to the mezzanine floor of the new Reading Room.  Details of all these moves can be found on the redevelopment web site at http://www2.hull.ac.uk/lli/pdf/book-moves.pdf

 

·         The refurbishment of floors 3 and 4 of the tower block is also nearing completion, and will be finished before the start of the new semester.  BJL staff will be moving the collections to be located on these floors into their permanent locations at the start of September.  Details of these moves can also be found on the redevelopment web site at http://www2.hull.ac.uk/lli/pdf/book-moves.pdf


·         In preparation for the start of work on Floors 2, 5, 6 and 7 of the tower block, BJL staff will begin to move books from these floors in early September.  Details of these moves can again be found on the redevelopment web site at http://www2.hull.ac.uk/lli/pdf/book-moves.pdf

·         During book moves the Library will be offering a retrieval service for books in transit.  You can request material online via the Library web site http://www2.hull.ac.uk/lli/book-retrieval.aspx , by phone or in person.  There will be regular retrievals during the day, and requested material should normally be available within two hours during the opening hours of the Library.

When’s it happening?

·         Books will start to be moved into the new Reading Room from Tuesday, 27 August

 

·         Books will start to be moved into permanent locations on Floor 3 from Monday, 2 September and on Floor 4 from Monday, 9 September


·         Books will start to be moved from Floors 2, 5, 6 and 7 from Monday, 16 September

University of York Library system upgrade

University of York Library are upgrading their library management systems and, as a result, some Library services will be restricted over the coming weeks while work is carried out. You'll also see changes once the new system goes live, including improved searching through YorSearch.

From the middle of August until early September, a number of Library facilities will be restricted or suspended while the library management systems are upgraded. Full details are available here. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

New research resource available

SAGE Research Methods Online is now available on the EBDM & Research page of the HYMS Library website (look under EBDM resources).

This resource contains a substantial collection of ebooks, journal articles, reference materials, videos and tools for exploring all aspects of the research process from identifying and understanding particular research methods to designing research projects, conducting research and writing up findings.

Included are SAGE's "Little Green Books" (the Quantitative Applications in the Social Sciences series) and "Little Blue Books" (the Qualitative Research Methods series).

New! HYMS Library webpage for new students

We have created a new page on our HYMS Library webpages especially for new students. The page, which is designed to help students about to start at HYMS, includes tips on how to decide which books to buy for your course, ways to save money when you do decide to purchase a textbook, information about the libraries and about finding and accessing resources.

Waterstones loyalty card

New home for masterpiece - Hull

Hull Ferens Art Gallery has bought the european materpiece "Pietro Lorenzetti's Christ Between Saint Paul and Saint Peter".

It is currently being looked after by the National Gallery in London before it makes it's way to Hull.
