Christmas is nearly upon us...

...and with that comes Christmas Opening Hours:

Hull:
The Brynmor Jones Library closes at 5pm on Christmas Eve and will re-open at 8:30am on Tuesday 27th December. The library will close again on Saturday 31 December at 5pm, will remain closed on 1 January, opening again at 8:30am on Monday  2 January. More information about Hull’s opening hours can be found on their website.
York:
The University Library will be closed from 4pm on Christmas Eve to 8am on Tuesday 27th December, and from 4pm on New Year's Eve to 8am on Monday 2nd January.
All loaned items from York are subject to recall throughout the Christmas vacation, but you'll have a whole week to get them back. Nothing will be due back between 22nd December and 5th January inclusive. More information about York's loans and hours can be found on their website.
Online Materials & SCONUL access:
It's worth remembering that most of the books we buy for HYMS are available electronically, so you should be able to access them wherever you are this Christmas. The same goes for our other e-resources. If you prefer something physical, you're in the UK or Ireland, and there's another university library nearby, you can always sign up to the SCONUL Access scheme which can get you into a large number of university libraries across the country. More details are available from the links below:
We hope you have a great Christmas break and enjoy your holidays.
Best wishes, HYMS Library Team

We all know that the Brynmor Jones is a stunner

We all know that the Brynmor Jones is a stunner and now RIBA have rubber stamped that with three awards; basically that means if Kevin McCloud spent his time making shows about libraries the BJL would be on the title screen. But we don't need television to make that happen, we have it for real! We couldn't agree with RIBA more, and we could go on writing and writing, but just look ...

Library System Upgrade

The Brynmoor Jones library at Hull are getting their techy screwdrivers out to  upgrade the library management system today, starting at 4pm and ending at 10pm. During the period of the upgrade, students and staff should borrow books via one of the Library help points.

Library accounts will be inaccessible during this time, so make sure that you have renewed your books that are due back today before 4pm, and any other essential library account activities.
The Library Catalogue will continue to be available.
The move to the new system, called Sierra, will mean a more joined up relationship with other campus systems and ultimately lead to a better experience for staff and students; so it’s a short bit of pain for some long term gain.

Art Gallery Collection on the Virtual Bookshelf

Calling all art connoisseurs!

In January cataloguing was completed on the York Art Gallery Gift Collection -  3,500 items donated to the Library by the York Museums Trust. Following on from this, the project team and Digital York have now launched the Virtual Bookshelf, which features many items from the collection - click on something that takes your interest, and you go straight to the catalogue entry, to find out where you can see it in real life. You can explore the Virtual Bookshelf at:
http://digital.york.ac.uk/showcase/yorkcityartgallery.jsp

The Virtual Bookshelf will add further collections over the coming months and you can read blog posts by Library staff about interesting and unique items in the collection on the Liberating Information blog: York City Art Gallery blog posts.

We're also looking forward to the opening of the art gallery at the Brynmor Jones Library in Hull. Paintings are being hung at the moment.

·         The 2nd floor of the east building contains three centrally bookable teaching rooms, 16 PCs, informal seating, group study rooms, an information point, and printing and recycling facilities.

Access to eresources at University of Hull library

Since January, the Brynmor Jones Library has introduced Shibboleth as its main authentication method, replacing Athens.

For users of the service, this results in two major differences:

1.) You no longer need an Athens username and Password for the University of Hull, and will sign in with the IT login you received instead.

2.) When accessing resources off-campus you will no longer look for the Athens login but for an institutional login and may then need to select the UK Access Management Federation and University of Hull from dropdown menus.

If you have previously saved the urls of any electronic resources supplied by the University of Hull in your favourites, it may be that your Athens details will have been saved as well, and that when you try to login to that resource it takes you to the Athens login.

If this takes place, you may need to clear your web cache.

If you have any queries about any of the above, please contact library@hyms.ac.uk.
