A new look to our website for the New Year

So this is Christmas, and what have we done? Well we've had the elves in to tidy up the HYMS Library website. The result is, we hope, a bit less heavy and a lot easier to find your way around.

We've reduced everything to a few main tabs:

Welcome - with links to these blog posts, and to our twitter feeds, plus more-prominent links out to the key resources you're likely to need for your searching.

Finding Resources - we've pulled together our Find Books, Find Articles and Find Journals pages into a single place, with resources grouped by type. We've tried to pretty it up a bit and make things a little clearer in the process.

Information Skills - all of our workbooks, slides, and interactive tutorials are pulled together into one page, along with links to research and referencing support at the two Universities.

We've also been working to make the site work better on mobile devices.

We've tried to make sure that we've not lost anything important in the course of the redesign, so if you're struggling to find something, do let us know. Likewise, if you have any feedback, we'd love to hear about it at library@hyms.ac.uk.

Christmas is coming...

...and with that comes Christmas Opening Hours:

Hull:

The Brynmor Jones Library closes at 12:30pm on Christmas Eve and will re-open at 8:30am on 4th January.

York:

The University Library will be closed from 4pm on Christmas Eve to 8am on Sunday 27th December, and from 4pm on New Year's Eve to 8am on Saturday 2nd January. Remember that from Christmas Eve onwards you'll need your University card to get in.

All loaned items from York are subject to recall throughout the Christmas vacation, but you'll have a whole week to get them back. Nothing will be due back between 21st December and 3rd January inclusive. More information about York's loans and hours can be found on their website.

Online Materials & SCONUL access:

It's worth remembering that most of the books we buy for HYMS are available electronically, so you should be able to access them wherever you are this Christmas. The same goes for our other e-resources. If you prefer something physical, you're in the UK or Ireland, and there's another university library nearby, you can always sign up to the SCONUL Access scheme which can get you in to a large number of university libraries across the country. More details are available from the links below:

Changes at the University of York Library & IT Support over Christmas

Don't forget your University card if you're visiting the
University of York Library any time from Christmas Eve

This Christmas, the University of York Library will be getting some new toys...

Turnstiles in operation at York from 9am on Christmas Eve

The Brynmor Jones Library at Hull already needs you to use your University card to get in and out of the building - it's a handy way to track how the library is being used throughout the day. At York a similar system has been in operation during night-time hours, and from 9am on 24th December, the University of York will be switching the turnstiles on full time in the Morrell Library. This means that from then on, whenever you visit the Library you’ll need to use your University card to operate the turnstiles. If you forget your card, or you’re not a member of the University, staff at the Reception will help you access the Library.

There's more information about the new turnstiles policy at York, and why it's being introduced, at the University of York website.

New IT Support model at York from 4th January

From the start of term, IT Support at the University of York will be moving to the Library Help Desk in Morrell. This will mean the service can be open for longer hours: 9am-7pm on weekdays, and 10am-6pm at the weekend. There will also be appointment bookings for more complex IT enquiries.

More information about the new Library & IT Help Desk is at the University of York website.

Shut up and write for Postgraduate Research Students, University of York Graduate Research School

York Graduate Research School are offering the following event:

Shut Up and Write for Postgraduate Research Studentsis a simple concept: it is an opportunity for you to start, continue, or finish written work in a supportive environment with other postgraduates.
How does it work?Come and work in silence but in the company of other research students. Switch off your phone and, using the power of peer pressure, avoid temptations to do anything but work on a piece of writing. What do I need to bring?A piece of work that you are working on. You can spend the time reading, taking notes, doing analysis, or anything else related to your research: it is up to you, but do have a goal in mind for what you want to achieve by the end of the event.A laptop or pen and paper – it depends what you are working on and how you prefer to work. What is the benefit?Hopefully you will surprise yourself when you see how much you get done when you focus. You will also meet new people from across University. Once you experience it, you may be inspired to start up your ownShut Up and Write sessions with your new or current colleagues.
DuringShut Up and Writewe will also be offering a drop-in service to provide help with:searching/finding informationusing reference management software (e.g. Endnote)referencingformatting documentsmanaging research dataopen access publicationcopyright (e.g. using third-party materials in your thesis).
When: Thursday 26 November, Thursday 3 December and Wednesday 9 December.Time: Any time from 9am to 5pm.Where: Room LFA 204/5 (2nd floor), Harry Fairhurst Building, University Library

University of York Library Survey

The University of York is running its 2015 survey. It's an opportunity to provide feedback on York's Library services and resources, and to have your say on what changes you'd like to see there. The survey can be found at https://www.york.ac.uk/library/news/2015/survey15/

HYMS students are members of the University of York Library irrespective of what site you're at. So if you're at Hull, you'll still be making use of York's e-resources, and there are plenty of questions about the online provision -- you can always choose "N/A" for anything that's not relevant to you. Plus there's the chance to win a Kindle Fire as an incentive to take part.

While we're on the subject of feedback, if you ever have any feedback for the University of Hull Library you can always make use of their feedback form.

And remember, if you have any comments or questions for the HYMS Library team, do feel free to get in touch with us at library@hyms.ac.uk.

MoreBooks

Are you a student? Do you want us to buy some more books?

The University of York is again giving students (and that includes all HYMS students) the opportunity to tell them what books to buy, whether it's a title the Library doesn’t have or an additional copy of a book you’re finding it hard to get your hands on. We aim to buy e-books through the scheme where possible, so even if you're based at Hull, there's absolutely no reason not to make use of your York credentials and take part.

A MoreBooks button (above) will appear alongside book titles in YorSearch and all you need to do is click it and enter your details in the form. To suggest an item that York doesn’t currently have, go to the New titles through MoreBooks form. The Library will then purchase a copy of the book you want, so please let us know what you'd like to see on the shelves and e-shelves!

AnatomyTV via NHS Athens - technical issues

Access to AnatomyTV via NHS Athens is currently exhibiting technical issues. When users log in they are told no current subscription exists. The issue is being investigated by NHS staff but there is currently no projected timescale for resolution.

In the meantime, you can use Aclands Anatomy instead. This is currently available via HYMS network/Remote desktop or the University of Hull proxy server only. The Video Atlas is productive and time efficient as a preview, as an adjunct to dissection, and as a review tool. It is also helpful for students who need to re-learn clinically relevant anatomy for their surgical rotations.

New reference management program available: Paperpile

HYMS students and staff can now get free access to the Paperpile reference management program via the University of York.

Paperpile is a simple but powerful web-based reference management tool, with special emphasis on integration with Google Docs and Google Scholar. It allows you to organise your research papers, sync PDFs to Google Drive and cite your references in Google Docs (it does not currently have direct integration with Microsoft Word).

To make full use of its functions you will need to access Paperpile via the Google Chrome browser (available on HYMS, Hull and York desktops), but the app is intuitive to use, and has particular strengths in the collation and organisation of references. It also has sharing capabilities for collaborative research. Paperpile is already being used by several academic staff at York, and the University is the first UK Higher Education institution to buy a site licence, making it freely available to all staff and students.

In addition to Paperpile, the University of York continues to offer access, training and support for EndNote and EndNote Online, and the University of Hull provides the same for RefWorks.

Information on how to access Paperpile, EndNote and RefWorks can be found in the Bibliographic management software box on our Research page:

Accessing eBooks and eJournal articles

To access eBooks and electronic journal articles, you will need your University of York and Hull IT account details.

Electronic journals and eBooks are usually only available at one University so the easiest way to find the resources is to use HYENA, the HYMS cross search engine. HYENA will open search results in two tabs, so you will need to have pop-ups enabled in your browser.

If accessing a University of York resource, electronic access will be listed under the View It tab of YorSearch if available. There may be more than one link (often for different date ranges if an eJournal). Choose the appropriate link. The York EZproxy service may prompt you for your York login details.

If accessing a University of Hull resource, when you follow the link from the library catalogue you may be asked to login via the Hull portal. If you are taken straight through to the resource, you will need to look for the login and then for the institutional or organisational login, choose United Kingdom Access Management Federation, and then University of Hull and login.

If you are logged in and cannot access the resource you have selected, check the following:

Is the article you want to access within the date range subscribed to by the library in question?

Are you signed in with the correct University?

If the answer is yes, contact library@hyms.ac.uk with the details of the article or ebook you are trying to access and we will look into it for you. See also libguides.hull.ac.uk/medicine.

World Book Day - Thursday 5th March

Thursday 5th March is World Book Day, and both University Libraries will be celebrating the event.

There's a World Book Day book swap in the Morrell Library foyer, University of York, from 12-2pm, if you've any books you want to exchange for something more to your liking!

Hull Uni Library will be taking to its various social media outlets to ask you about your favourite book. Follow the social media links at the Brynmor Jones Library homepage.

The University of York are also running a literary quiz with a chance to win the last five Man Booker Prize winning novels! More information can be found on the York World Book Day 2015  news item.

Throughout the day, both @HullUni_Library and @UoYLibrary will be providing Twitter with bookish updates, and we'll be getting involved too on our own Twitter account: @HYMSLibrary

Support for students and staff with disabilities

Both University Libraries are committed to ensuring that all members can make the best possible use of their services and collections, and where possible the Libraries provide a bespoke service to students and staff with disabilities.

Further information for each site can be found online:

York also offer one-to-one tours of the Library. These can be arranged at a time to suit you and will take approximately 30 minutes. A member of Library staff will show you around the facilities and explain the range of assistance and services that are offered. Tours can be booked via Disability Services, or you can contact the Library directly at lib-enquiry@york.ac.uk. If you’re happy to explain the nature of your disability when you book the tour or when you arrive, it will help the Library to tailor their services to your needs.

MoreBooks scheme

Are you a student? Do you want us to buy some more books?

The University of York is again giving students (and that includes all HYMS students) the opportunity to tell them what books to buy, whether it's a title the Library doesn’t have or an additional copy of a book you’re finding it hard to get your hands on. We aim to buy e-books through the scheme where possible, so even if you're based at Hull, there's absolutely no reason not to make use of your York credentials and take part.

There's £20K to spend and the scheme will close when all the money's used up.

A MoreBooks button (above) will appear alongside book titles in YorSearch and all you need to do is click it and enter your details in the form. To suggest an item that York doesn’t currently have, go to the New titles through MoreBooks form. The Library will then purchase a copy of the book you want.

Last time we ran MoreBooks, more HYMS students offered suggestions than ever before, and we're looking forward to doing even more book-shopping this time around, so please let us know what you'd like to see on the shelves and e-shelves!
